HAPPY 25th BIRTHDAY TO PREVENT CHILD ABUSE ATHENS! [PCAA Website]

In 1986 several volunteers came together to address the issue of child abuse. At that time Clarke County had one of the State's highest rates of child abuse.

They decided to form the Athens Area Child Abuse Prevention Council and also became a Charter member of Prevent Child Abuse Georgia.

Over the years First Steps & Healthy Families programs, as well as Parenting Classes, were added. Paid staff, volunteers, partner agancies, and dedicated Boards of Directors worked together to reduce the tragedy of child abuse and neglect -- and it has paid off.

The rate of child abuse has been reduced from 35 to 10 per 1,000 -- still too many.

PCAA celebrates its 25th aniversary during 2010-2011. We have several events planned and hope you can join us in them. But first, please let your families and friends know that child abuse and neglect can be prevented -- that they are immune to socio- or economic strata. By reducing stress and risk factors in families before they reach harmful stages, the children can live happy, healthy, and productive lives -- for the REST of their lives.

PCAA's goal is that EVERY ATHENS-AREA CHILD WILL NOT ONLY BE FREE OF ABUSE, BUT WILL BE RAISED IN A POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT BY POSITIVE CAREGIVERS WHO NURTURE AND SUPPORT.
