Why do we need to prevent child abuse?Because 1 in 5 children is a victim of child abuse
or neglect. There are 1700 deaths due to child abuse each year. Children under age 4 are most at risk. Child abuse leads to many
poor outcomes for children, lasting even through adulthood.

How about this: PCAA held a Prevent Bullying Workshop on October 13th, with Dr. Andy Horne and Dr. Pamela Orpinas speaking. 27 participants: administrators, counselors, and social workers, all representing 12 schools, participated. Our co-host was Georgia Conflict Center. A package of wristbands with the message "See a bully, stop a bully..." was given to each school counselor to use at their schools.

Our Healthy Families trip to Pumpkin Patch was Oct 28th. 51 parents, children, & staff played and ate at Washington Farms in Oconee County.

<<< In June 2011 Prevent Child Abuse Athens received a $2,400 grant from Jackson EMC to focus on ending neglect and abuse, to help fund 24 Parenting Skills classes to teach positive discipline, communication, how to handle feelings, stress reduction and child development stages. THANKS JACKSON EMC!
Watch out for our Zumba marathon at the State Botanical Garden fundraiser to be held in January 2012 to benefit Prevent Child Abuse Athens!
Our first 5K was held on April 30, 2011. 170 runners and walkers turned out for our 6th Prevention walk and 1st 5K, held on the beautiful UGA campus. We called it Run, Roll & Stroll and we had individuals and families participating in all three ways. We are already making plans for next year. See the PICS!
Our 20th Annual Starry, Starry, Night dinner and auction was held on March 26, 2011 at the Athens Country Club. 200+ guests and supporters enjoyed a fabulous dinner and fun silent and live auctions. This event raised $47,000 for family support services provided by PCAA. A big "Thank You" to sponsors, attendees and everyone who donated items for our auctions.
We recently hosted two trainings for the community, Darkness to Light for prevention of child sexual abuse and Survival Stances, Working with Families in Crisis. Thanks to our presenters, the Cottage and Clarity Counseling, for partnering with us to offer these informative workshops.

Yes, we held special events, but services continued…..
First Steps, Healthy Families, and Parenting Classes offer parenting education and support to families in the four-county Athens area. We received referrals from school counselors, hospital social workers, DFCS, and the health district. You may have read that child abuse rates are down in Athens; yes, that is the good news! We want to continue that trend and reduce the difficult problem of child neglect. That rate is still very high.
How can you help? Volunteer with us, stay informed through our website (pcaathens.org), help a family member or friend who is experiencing a stressful time, donate needed items such as diapers and newborn items. Call or email us for additional ideas.
